EIT DIGITAL Master in Data Science at UNS

The EIT Digital master school offers 9 programmes, in different technical majors. The common point in all these 2 years master programmes is that they include 30 ECTS of Innovation and Entrepreunership (I&E). I&E is taught mainly during the Master 1 year. It concludes by a 2 or 3 weeks summer school in I&E during the summer between master 1 and master 2.

UNS delivers a Master Informatique, spécialité IFI/Ingénierie, to the students that get enrolled in the EIT Digital track Data Science.

In the EIT Digital Data Science (DSC) track UNS acts as both an entry and an exit point. The core of the courses of the entry point is ground on the Master 1 IFI, International Track, to which are plugged specific Master 2/SI5 courses (like Data mining and Big data technologies). From september 2018, more courses from the Sciences des Données option of the Mathématiques Appliquées et Modélisation department from Polytech will be replacing some of those courses. Besides, some new courses will be taken from the EUR (Graduate School) DS4H under deployment at UNS/Université Côte d'Azur.

The I&E 24 ECTS are included in this Master 1 specific EIT Digital Track. More details can be found under this web site http://mastercs.unice.fr/. Possible entry points for DSC, in other countries as France are: TU/e(Netherlands), UPM (Madrid)Politecnico di Milano (Polimi) and added recently KTH (Stockholm).

The exit point in Data Science offers a specialization in Multimedia and Web Science for Big Data. It is designed as a relevant mixing between some of the mandatory courses in two tracks of the Master 2 / SI5-MAM5 programmes: respectively, from the GMD (SD) and the WEB ones.

For Polytech Engineering SI students, a nice option is to apply for their 4th engineering year as a Master 1 at UPM, and to come back at UNS for doing the master 2 (DSC program is also relevant for MAM students). Be aware of the English proficiency proof that you need to provide at the application time. Application period opens from approx. November 15 and closes approx. mid of April. For French students, it is thus highly recommended to plan to get an English proficiency test in the middle at latest of their 3rd engineering year, so to be capable to apply for a Master 1 in replacement of their 4th engineering year. TOEFL or IELTS tests are requested for "native" english speaking countries, whereas formal proof of a B2 level is sufficient in the others like Spain or Italy. All details can be found there. How to get the Polytech Engineering Degree in addition to the double master degrees from EIT Digital partners

From cohort 2018, Polytech Nice Sophia engineering school offers the opportunity to also deliver a French engineering degree to EIT Digital data science master students with UNS as first year. The CTI gives its label to some French and non French engineering schools, and the engineering degree from France is equivalent to a master degree. A typical engineering degree is a 5 years long curriculum, that is 10 semesters including one semester which is fully devoted to the final degree interenship (Semester 10).

The requirement to be awarded any engineering CTI labelled degree is to have studied during 3 semesters in the Polytech Nice Sophia premises, and have done the Semester 4 of the master curriculum as a 4 to 6 months internship (which corresponds to the Semester 10 of the Polytech degree).

After your Master 1 as EIT Digital student at UNS/Polytech, you will already have studied two semesters from the Polytech engineering degree. Concretely, you are offered for free, the opportunity to be also registered as a 4th year Polytech "MAM : Mathématiques Appliquées et Modélisation" student.  From 2018-19, the content of the EIT Digital master 1 at UNS program is indeed  close to the 4th year MAM curriculum, Sciences des Données speciality (i.e. in practice you will share half of your courses with this curriculum).

As an EIT Digital exit point student studying outside France, you will be registered for free as a Master 2 UNS Data science student. Once again, you will be offered the possibility to also be registered and for free, as a 5th year Polytech MAM student. During your second year, this implies that whatever location you will do your semester 4 EIT Digital master internship, it will also be accounted as the mandatory semester internship for the 5th year as a Polytech engineering student.

Eventually, what you will only have to do, is to register for one more academic year as 5th year Polytech student.  But this time, you will have to individually enroll and pay the fees: the fees are along the French guidelines, that is around 600 euros for the full year, which includes the French national health insurance.You will be offered to choose among 5th' year MAM English taught courses that you have not yet studied as elective during your first year as UNS EIT Digital master in Data science student.

Once you will have terminated this additional semester of courses at Polytech, you will be graduated with the Polytech engineering degree, in Mathématiques Appliquées et Modélisation, Science des Données. The jury takes place once all marks from the semester 9 of courses have been collected, that means, at latest in April.

Specialization in Data Science: Multimedia and Web Science for Big Data

The specialization is composed of two types of application of data science courses to attend in the first semester, itself decomposed in two periods:

  • Multimedia
  • Web

The first semester is 30 ECTS, out of which 6 ECTS are dedicated to a I&E minor study that is going to start in the first semester and delivered continuously and at the latest, at the end of it. EIT Digital local I&E coordinator will provide you with relevant business cases, most of them proposed by the various EIT Digital Action lines / Thematic areas. Moroever, the coordinator will propose you some EIT Digital level selected business cases, onto which you will be invited to work in small groups.

The second semester is 30 ECTS and is enterly dedicated to the Internship work out of which the student is defending a master thesis at the beginning of September.  Guidelines for conducting these thesis are defined at the EIT DIGITAL Master School level. 

Technical courses are consisting of 24 ECTS.

From the Multimedia/GMD - SD track, the selected modules are (in red, mandatory ones):

  • Multimedia data processing decomposed in three courses :

    Data Science (2 ECTS) in Period 1: seminars conducted by industrial persons, that present concrete projects they run in which Data Science methodology is applied to e.g. smart cities, cybercriminality, aerospace industry, ... This also includes hands-on on Jupyter notebooks and resolution of Kagle challenges. All the various works provide marks that get averaged.

    Compression, analysis and visualisation of multimedia content (2 ECTS) ) Period 1

    Multimedia data management (2 ECTS) Period 2

  •  Analysis, Mining and Indexing of structured or semi-structured Web data, images and videos in big multimedia systems decomposed in three courses :

    Analysis and indexing of images and videos (2 ECTS) Period 2

    Data Mining (2 ECTS) Period 2  

    Technologies for massive data  (2 ECTS) Period 1

From the Web Science/WEB track, a typical set of selected modules could be:

  •  Web Science, decomposed in three courses :

    Web of Data (2 ECTS) Period 1

    Semantic Web (2 ECTS)  Period 2 

    Knowledge engineering (2 ECTS)  Period 1

A Final Study Project (PFE), of 4 to 6 ECTS. Engineering or Research oriented subjects are published from end of september each year there and complemented by specific call for subjects for EIT Digital students

Additionnally other optional courses have to been taken, so to earn additional ECTS. The list of optional courses (each one is by default 2 ECTS) is for 2017-2018 the following, and it is advised to balance at most as possible the load between Period 1 and Period 2:

  • Virtualized infrastructures in cloud computing Period 2
  • Middleware for Internet of things Period 2
  • Large Scale Distributed systems Period 2
  • Ingénierie 3D Period 2
